About Us

The Harborview Literacy Council is a registered nonprofit founded in 2004 in Harborview. We believe every adult deserves the dignity of reading confidently.

We run free one-on-one adult reading tutoring, English conversation circles for newcomers, and a family reading night every Thursday at the Harborview Public Library.

The council is governed by a volunteer board of seven residents. Our coordinator is our only paid staff member. Our tutors are trained volunteers. In 2025, 84 volunteer tutors worked with 212 adult learners. We are funded by donations and a municipal community grant.
